This is a map of the Jefferson Proving Ground. A Firing Line divides the Proving Ground into the Northern Area, which covers about 85 percent of the Proving Ground, and the Cantonment Area, which covers the remaining 15 percent of the Proving Ground at the Southern tip.A number of environmental cleanup actions have been completed or are ongoing in the Cantonment Area. The Cantonment Area encompasses approximately 4,310 acres. About 3,400 acres have been leased to Ford Lumber and Building Supply Company. Land is being formally transferred to this new owner as sites are cleaned up.

A total of 50 potentially contaminated areas, known as solid waste management units, were investigated in studies completed in 1994.

The types of sites investigated include underground storage tanks, buildings, waste storage areas, solvent pits, incinerators, and landfills.

Approximately half of these sites have no further action and will be closed.

The remaining sites were addressed in the RI. The feasibility study (FS) identified methods to clean up contaminated sites. The proposed plan identifies the preferred remedy for 15 sites assessed in the FS.

The Cantonment Area Map (69k) shows about 2,234 acres in the Cantonment Area that were identified as possibly containing unexploded ordnance (UXO) based on a survey by the U.S. Army Corps Engineers. The Army has complete all related UXO surveys and removal activities.
