Endangered Species

Threatened, rare, and endangered species occur within the boundaries of JPG. The current Memorandum of Agreement between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Army provides for developing and implementing an endangered species management plan, including documenting the distribution and status of these species.

Flora

• A survey completed in 1993 documented 29 species of listed plants, 21 of which are threatened, rare, and endangered species. Ten state endangered, 1 state threatened, 11 rare, and 8 state watch list species were found at JPG, including the only occurrence of the state endangered climbing fern in Indiana. The endangered species include clustered foxglove, twining bartonia, elliptical rushfoil, round-leaved boneset, tree clubmoss, climbing fern, Maryland meadow beauty, longbeak arrowhead, and netted chain-fern.
• Among the 11 rare species are the pretty sedge, crinkleroot, running pine, and smooth white violet.
• One threatened species exists, the slick seed wild-bean.

Fauna

• There is 1 threatened species (bald eagle) and 4 Federally endangered animals (3 birds and 1 mammal) that may occur within the boundaries of JPG. The three bird species are transients that may occur during migration, including the peregrine falcon, and Kirtland's warbler.
• The Federally endangered Indiana bat has been verified to live and thrive in specific portions of the JPG impact area.
• The U.S. Fish and Wildlife and U.S. Army Memorandum of Agreement include plans to evaluate the Indiana bat's summer habitat in the firing range.
