North of Firing Line

The area north of the firing line (also referred to as the Northern Firing Range Area) includes approximately 51,000 acres.

The U.S. Army is proceeding cautiously on intrusive studies of this area because of the potential safety hazards and high costs of investigations and related cleanup activities. The Army's future plans will be consistent with the proposed munitions cleanup (See Range Rule).

Unexploded Ordnance

• The U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, in a study of this area, determined that the entire 51,000 acres north of the firing line is potentially contaminated with unexploded ordnance (UXO).
• Over more than 50 years of operation, approximately 25 million rounds were tested and as many as 1.5 million rounds of unexploded ordnance (UXO) with high explosive still exist within the boundaries of JPG.
• Estimates to survey and clear the area of UXO ranges from $2 - 8 billion, depending on the level of cleanup.
• The U.S. Army completed a limited investigation of potential munitions constituents impacts of range training operations at JPG in 2003. The results indicated that various environmental media were not adversely impacted and that these contaminants did not pose a risk to ecological and human receptors.
• The Army is deferring additional investigations of the area north of the firing line because of the physical hazards associated with UXO. The timeline for these investigations will depend on regulatory requirements, the level of safety that can be attained during investigations, and the UXO removal technology available.
