North of Firing Line

This is a map of the Jefferson Proving Ground showing the Depleted Uranium Area. A Firing Line divides the Proving Ground into the Northern Area, which covers about 85 percent of the Proving Ground, and the Cantonment Area, which covers the remaining 15 percent of the Proving Ground at the Southern tip. The Depleted Uranium Area, an area about one third the size of the Cantonment area, falls just north of this Firing Line. The area north of the firing line (also referred to as the Northern Firing Range Area) includes approximately 51,000 acres.

The U.S. Army is proceeding cautiously on intrusive studies of this area because of the potential safety hazards and high costs of investigations and related cleanup activities. The Army's future plans will be consistent with the proposed munitions cleanup (See Range Rule).
