DU History

This is a map of the Jefferson Proving Ground showing the Depleted Uranium Area. A Firing Line divides the Proving Ground into the Northern Area, which covers about 85 percent of the Proving Ground, and the Cantonment Area, which covers the remaining 15 percent of the Proving Ground at the Southern tip. The Depleted Uranium Area, an area about one third the size of the Cantonment area, falls just north of this Firing Line. The Army received, stored, and fired depleted uranium (DU) munitions from 1984 - 1994. Approximately 100,000 kg of DU penetrators were fired to track firing, flight, and trajectory-accuracy testing of kinetic energy weapons.

The DU impact area is the area where DU penetrators, or their fragments, eventually stopped after being fired from one of the three positions several miles down range. This area constitutes approximately 2,000 acres within the 51,000-acre area north of the firing line.

Within the 51,000 acres, there are an estimated 1.5 million rounds of unexploded ordnance (UXO).

The 2,000 acre DU area contains 70,000 kg of DU and one of the largest concentrations of UXO at the site.
